Developing an ontology-based system for retrieving and contextualizing petroleum production data

Abstract: Efficient access to relevant information is crucial for various data-driven operations within organizations. However, this process often involves significant time investment and the need for often manual and nonreusable mappings to utilize the available data properly. Ontologies offer a solution by enabling upfront integration and contextualization of data, facilitating the access to integrated and semantically enriched information. In this paper, we report on the process of developing an ontology-based system for the domain of petroleum production. We present its conceptual structure, architecture, and implementation, discussing some of the decisions and trade-offs imposed by the practical setting of the application.
